KVIN Pledge: for Local Opticians

Last week we had an open evening for Opticians in Kirklees called Seeing beyond the Eyes. We invited anyone working in Optician Practices to come along to find out about what we do and how our work is relevant to their work

Only 17 per cent of people experiencing sight loss are offered emotional support in response to their deteriorating vision. With very little effort, opticians can make a tremendous difference to people experiencing sight loss by referring them to their local sight loss charity.

We launched the KVIN Pledge for local Opticians on the night which details simple things practices can do to support patients with sight loss conditions. Download the full pledge here.

By joining the KVIN Pledge, your practice will be able to put customers with visual impairments at ease, making them more likely to return and spend money within the business. Research shows that people with disabilities have a spending power of £212 million in the UK. In Kirklees there are at least 8500 partially sighted people.

Here is an example of one of the simple things you can do as part of the pledge;

Work with KVIN, learn about our services and how we benefit people;

  • visit us and speak to us to learn about our services so that you understand what we do and who will benefit from attending our services.
  • display our leaflets or posters describing our drop-in services within the shop floor and via your website and social media.
  • make referrals to KVIN via our website (www.kvin.org.uk)

We are asking Opticians to take on board some of the pledge suggestions and if they do to let us know what they are doing. We will then list the Opticians taking part on our website so local people with sight loss will know which opticians are better prepared to support them well.
