Monthly News Roundup: July 2021

Hello, we hope this newsletter finds you safe and well. In the last two weeks we have been over the moon to welcome our members back to a face to face group, meeting in Batley. We have welcomed 20 members back, supported by a team of volunteers. It’s been wonderful to have made this start and we look forward to more face to face groups in the coming months.

In August, we are resuming our walking group for 2 walks from Dewsbury and Batley, if you’d like to join in, please get in touch! We hope the walking group will be running on a more regular basis from September.

KVIN is here for you if you are visually impaired and live in Kirklees or surrounding areas. We are a network of staff, volunteers and service users with visual impairments available to provide a range of support.

  • If you are feeling lonely, we can connect you with others who may be feeling lonely too.

  • If you’d like to carry on reading your favourite books, we can explain the options available for audio or reading books.

  • If you just want to know what support is available for people with sight loss, get in touch and we can help you with what YOU need.

As lockdown is easing, we are resuming our face to face services slowly, but some of our virtual services remain too.

Here’s a summary of our weekly activities,also check whats coming up for one off events or activities in July and August;

  • Wednesday: 10am-2.30pm Batley Group at the Whitfield Centre, Batley office open for tech support appointments.
  • Thursday: 11am Zoom Chat, 11am Group Telephone Chat, 2pm Group Telephone Chat, 2.30pm Crochet Class via Zoom, Huddersfield office open for tech support appointments.
  • Friday: 10am Group Telephone Chat, 11am Zoom Chat, 1pm Anything Apple Group, 3pm Anything Android Group (running on alternate weeks).

We have a range of additional events and groups running, the details are below;

  • Wednesday 14th July: Community Champions COVID Testing Demonstration. During our regular Peer Support group at the Whitfield Centre in Batley, the Community Champions team will be joining us in their Mobile Sight Loss unit to do VI friendly lateral flow test demonstrations. One to one support will also be available for any COVID-19 related questions or queries you may have.

  • Wednesday 14th July: Yoga. During our regular group at the Whitfield Centre, Ellie from Umbrella Yoga will be joining us for a second face-to-face Yoga session at 12pm. To book a place, please contact Claire (07708 054245 or

  • Thursday 15th July: Campaign Group. Another meeting of our Campaign Group, at 1pm via Zoom, for people interested in proactively helping to make changes through campaigning. If anyone is interested in getting involved, please contact Sam Heaton on 07518 080271 or

  • Wednesday 21st July: Cooking Skills Share. During our regular group at the Whitfield Centre, join Sam & Mark to try out some gadgets for making cooking in the kitchen easier, as well as sharing tips and solutions to help make life easier.

  • Thursday 22nd July: App Chat with Sam. During the regular Zoom chat, join Sam who will share her favourite apps this month, share your favourite apps too.

  • Wednesday 28th July: Meet Nicki Rowe, ECLO at Dewsbury Hospital. Meet Nicki during our regular group at the Whitfield Centre, between 10.30am and 12pm, to share an update on Eye Clinics and Low Vision clinics and discuss what services are available.

  • Wednesday 4th August: Meet Michelle from Community Plus. Meet Michelle Williams during our regular group at the Whitfield Centre, between 10am and 12pm, where she will discuss the services available from Community Plus and answer any questions.

  • Date to be confirmed for July: Quiz Night. Join our monthly quiz night on Zoom to test your general knowledge, all welcome.

  • Thursday 5th August & 12th August: Walking Group. The walking group is back in August, with the first session meeting on Thursday 5th August at Dewsbury Train Station and the second on Thursday 12th August at Batley Bus Station (both meeting at 10am). Places are limited, so please let Claire know if you’d like to join in (07708 054245 or, one walk per person to start with, extending to two if there is availability).


Summer Hamper Fundraiser

We have another Hamper Draw Fundraiser which has just gone live! Please get involved by making a donation for a chance to win this lovely hamper full of summer treats.

Summer Fayre

We are pleased to announce our very first Summer Fayre to raise funds for Kirklees Visual Impairment Network!

This fun day out for all the family will be held at The Whitfield Centre in Batley on Saturday 14th August from 10am-3pm, everyone is welcome!

Please spread the word and invite friends and family to come along on the day.

A little bit of Locala help

In June we were pleased to be able to welcome a team of staff volunteers from Locala, a local healthcare provider and not for profit organisation.
